THE DAMNATION OF JOHN DONELLAN
Shown above, Uk edition (left) and USA edition (right).
I had one of the most rewarding experiences of my life with this book - not only the intensity of the research which I absolutely LOVED, but in a review from The Times afterwards which called the book 'a masterpiece'. A total dream of a review, and one which almost made me retire because - 'You can't get better than that!' :D
The story of an eighteenth-century murder trial - a battle to the death between mother and son-in-law. Was John Donellan really guilty of murdering his brother-in-law so that John's wife could inherit the vast Boughton family estates? Or was he the victim of a miscarriage of justice, caught by class warfare and prejudice?
Using the original trial transcripts and with reference to archives not seen before, the event is painstakingly recreated and gives insight into Georgian society.
